There are three types of Tay-Sachs: infantile or early onset, juvenile, and adult or late onset. Early onset Tay-Sachs was first described independently by Drs. Tay and Sachs in the mid-1880s. Dr. Tay was an opthalmologist who noticed characteristic "cherry-red" spots in the retina of babies with the problem. Dr. Sachs was a neurologist who noticed the familial inheritance among Eastern European Jews.
