Sickle-cell disease or sickle-cell anaemia is a blood disorder characterized by red blood cells that assume an abnormal, rigid, sickle shape. Sickling decreases the cells' flexibility and results in their restricted movement through blood vessels, depriving downstream tissues of oxygen. It is believed that people who carry only one sickle cell mutation (they do not have the disease) can tolerate malaria better than people who carry no mutations.
