Definition

Hypoventilation is breathing that is not adequate to meet the needs of the body (too shallow or too slow), or reduced lung function. The carbon dioxide level rises, leading to inadequate oxygen in the blood.

In medicine, hypoventilation occurs when ventilation is inadequate to perform needed gas exchange. It generally causes an increased concentration of carbon dioxide and respiratory acidosis.
