Definition

Congenital syphilis is a severe, disabling, and often life-threatening infection seen in infants. A pregnant mother who has syphilis can spread the disease through the placenta to the unborn infant.


Symptoms

Symptoms in newborns may include:

  • Failure to gain weight or failure to thrive
  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • No bridge to nose (saddle nose)
  • Early rash -- small blisters on the palms and soles
  • Later rash -- copper-colored, flat or bumpy rash on the face, palms, soles

Congenital syphilis is syphilis present in utero and at birth, and occurs when a child is born to a mother with secondary or tertiary syphilis. Untreated syphilis results in a high risk of a bad outcome of pregnancy, including Mulberry molars in the fetus. Syphilis can cause miscarriages, premature births, stillbirths, or death of newborn babies. Some infants with congenital syphilis have symptoms at birth, but most develop symptoms later....

let your Dr know this right away i think they will need to give you and antibiotic before you deliver then all will be OK
