Normal Results
For a random urine sample, the normal values are approximately 0 to 8 mg/dL. For a 24-hour urine collection, the normal value is less than 150 mg per 24 hours. Note: Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results.
Risks
There are no risks.

Why the Test is Performed
This test is most often performed when kidney disease is suspected. It may be used as a screening test. Normally, protein is not found in urine when a routine dipstick test is performed. This is because the kidney is supposed to keep large molecules, such as protein, in the blood and only filter out smaller impurities. Even if small amounts of protein do get through, they are normally reabsorbed by the body and used as a source of energy. Some proteins will appear in the urine if the levels of protein in blood become high, even when the kidney is functioning properly. If the kidney is diseased, protein will appear in the urine even if blood levels are normal.
Encyclopedia: Albuminuria
Albuminuria is a pathological condition where albumin is present in the urine. It is a type of proteinuria. The amount of protein being lost in the urine can be quantified by collecting the urine for 24 hours, measuring a sample of the pooled urine, and extrapolating to the volume collected. The kidneys normally filter out large molecules from the urine, so albuminuria can be an indicator of damage to the...

Polycystic Kidney Disease
There is currently no cure for polycystic kidney disease. In the early stages, a patient can be treated for high blood pressure, pain, and any other secondary symptoms. If the disease progresses to the point of kidney failure, dialysis and kidney transplantation provide replacement therapy, but does not cure PKD.

Blood Sugar Slide Show
For those with diabetes testing your blood sugar is an important part of managing your health. Whether you're a pro or just starting out this slide show from the Mayo Clinic takes you through the entire process from washing your hands to recording the numbers to storing your glucometer.
A Step-by-Step Look at Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis. Learn about it with this slide show:
Dialysis removes waste and balances the electrolyte and fluid level of the blood. These tasks are usually performed by the kidneys. However, when the kidneys can no longer do their job sufficiently, or when they are removed, dialysis is an artificial way to mimic their function. There are two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Learn about hemodialysis in this slide show.
Choosing an Insulin Delivery Device Slide Show
Learn about various insulin delivery devices in this slide show:
If you are a diabetic who uses insulin as part of your diabetes treatment, you may have thought about choosing an insulin pump. Insulin pumps aim to mimic natural insulin levels in your blood by delivering continuous (basal) doses of insulin at all times, as well as supplemental (bolus) doses before meal times. Learn about the pros and cons of insulin pumps in this slide show.
