Scarlet Fever

Scarlet fever is a disease caused by an infection of the throat with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal bacteria (strep throat).

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Rash on neck and chest; rough "sandpaper" feel to the skin
  • Peeling (desquamation) of the finger tips, toes, and groin
  • Swollen, red tongue (strawberry tongue)
  • Pastia's lines (bright red color in the creases of the underarm and groin)

  • Headache
  • Generalized discomfort (malaise)

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Breast Cancer

The striking findings from a Canadian study was released in advanced of this month's annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The study found that women with vitamin D deficiency were 94% more likely to see their cancer spread - and 73% more likely to die - than women with adequate levels of the vitamin. Vitamin D can be found in fish, oysters, dairy products, and is mostly produced in the body when the skin is exposed to UV rays. Full story.
