Phytosterols

Phytosterols are a group of naturally occurring chemicals found in plants. They are used as food additives and cosmetic additives.

Some studies show that phytosterols can reduce cholesterol levels - both the total cholesterol level and the LDL cholesterol level. Because of this many butter and margarine spreads now incorporate phytosterols and are marketed as "cholesterol reducing."

There are currently no obvious side effects of phytosterol supplementation.
